Henniker, N.H. – The New England College men's ice hockey team fell in a 3-2 final in overtime to the #1 Cadets of Norwich University in an ECAC-East matchup at Lee Clement Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Pilgrims fall to 9-8-4 on the season and 6-5-3 in the conference, while the win improves the Cadets record to 18-1-1 overall and 13-1-1 in the league.
The period started off very even, with neither team being able to jump on the scoreboard. With 12:35 left to play in the period, Samuli Turunen (Joensuu, Finland) netted a goal from the left circle on two great passes from Niko Uola (Turku, Finland) and Freddie Bystorm (Stockholm, Sweden). NEC goalie Shawn Sirman (Blezard Valley, Ontario) made nine saves in the period, deflecting all of the Cadets shots on target, giving the Pilgrims a 1-0 lead after the first intermission.
Norwich started the second period on a power play and capitalized on it just 39 seconds into the period on a goal by Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.). The Pilgrims committed five penalties in the period compared to the Cadets one. With 9:54 left on the clock, Norwich tallied their second goal of the game on a goal by Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn.). The Cadets took the 2-1 advantage into the second intermission.
NEC added a second goal midway through the third period to tie the game 2-2 on another goal by Turunen. Dispite racking up three more penalties in the period, the Pilgrims were able to hold off the offensive surge by Norwich to force overtime.
After just one minute of play in the overtime period, Tory Allen (Davidson, Sask.) netted the game-winning goal for the Cadets, taking assists from Colin Mulvey and Christophe Paquet and propelling them to their 18th win of the season.
The Norwich will travel to Skidmore on Friday the 10th in a 7:00 pm showdown.
